Catholic News Agency provides a substantial list of articles relating to women in the church since the beginning of the Francis papacy. The articles are listed in a descending order of occurrence. Does any of it represent progress? It definitely represents both forward and backward steps, which is probably to be expected. Is there a gradual progression within this back-and-forth activity?

Although Saint John Paul II emphasized the dignity of every human being, the church seemed to find little or no way to affirm that dignity. Is the Francis effect finally beginning to bear fruit in this area?

I sat watching the 11 p.m. news as the Ebola patient from Dallas, Nina Pham, landed at the airport in Frederick, Md. She was on her way to the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. Frederick is a little more than an hour from my house. Bethesda is about 20 minutes from where my sister lives in Washington, D.C.

It looks like a Republican sweep on Election Day

I was preparing my latest blog post, which was to be titled, "The Democrats still have a good shot at retaining the Senate." Let me share some of the reasons I felt this was so, even though pollsters and pundits were already giving Republicans more than a 60 percent chance of taking the Senate.

Republicans need to gain six seats to retake the Senate. It really all hinges on a number of very close races across the country.

Synod on the Family

Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia is confused about the recently completed family synod in Rome. He notes that "confusion is of the devil."

Chaput wants to clearly restate church teaching on homosexuals and marriage. I wonder how many times we need to restate the obvious. Is that our only function? Is it simply to keep repeating the same words over and over that everybody already knows and has heard many times?

The Catholic church is well-known for its opposition to many important "-isms" over the years: It has railed against secularism, materialism, communism, and modernism with vigor and determination. Now it appears Pope Francis has decided to argue against an "-ism" of a different sort.

For more than a year now, Francis has repeatedly returned to the issue of religious fundamentalism and has condemned it, whether Christian, Muslim or Jewish fundamentalism.

The terrorist attack on the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo once again gives rise to the controversy over whether there is a violent element that is part of the religion of Islam. Nicholas Kristof argues for a distinction between Muslim terrorists and the vast majority of adherents to Islam.

The sacrament of penance may not be the most critical issue facing the church today, but I suspect it is an important one for many individual Catholics. Pope Francis has spoken frequently about confession over the past few years, including during one of his morning Masses in late January.
